FAQs for newborn sessions

What kinds of newborn sessions do you offer?

There are two types of sessions that will be offered with Vintage Diamond Photography. Lets get down to the nitty gritty of each type.

The first type of newborn session is called posed newborn. This will include the typical “wrapped and warm” poses on a bean bag or table with props. I am sure you are very familiar with this type of photography. It usually involves being done in a studio or very controlled environment. These also include backdrops and fancy outfits and wraps to make your little bundle of joy just shine through and be the center of attention for the session.

The other option would be to do a lifestyle session. These are my FAVORITE! These sessions are laid back and go with the flow. I will be a fly on the wall to capture your family the way you are in the moment. Creating art from shared moments is what I love most. We will move around your house to the most lit up areas from windows. Those rooms usually include a master bedroom, kitchen, living room, and nursery. I also love getting those little detail shots of the nursery and or close up shots of details from baby like eye lashes, nose, feet, etc.

I have a growing client closet for my babies when it comes to wraps, headbands, hats, props and so much more! I have also invested in special equipment in order to make the experience for baby and their family an enjoyable and unforgettable time.

How long have you been doing newborn photography?

I have been doing portrait and family photography since Oct 2021, but just recently opened up my books to adding more newborn photography to my portfolio! I am beyond excited! I have invested MANY HOURS into my newborn education because safety is key. You want to book a photographer that has spent a lot of time perfecting the poses and precautions with handling babies. I am also an RN so I have a background of what to look for in a baby when things need to be adjusted and changed. You always want to make sure safety is number one. If I pose a baby and I have any doubts about the safety of the baby, I will change the pose immediately.

When is the best time to schedule my baby’s newborn session?

The best time to schedule your newborn’s session is based on your needs. I always recommend doing any posed and wrapped sessions around 7-10 days old. This can obviously be adjusted based on size of baby and alertness. The reason why this works the best is because baby usually stays in wraps a lot nicer and are easier to console back to sleep to get the best out of their posed session. I would consider doing posed sessions on older babies but once they hit about a 4-6 weeks, it becomes a safety concern with being wrapped. We can discuss that if you baby is older than that. If you are scheduling just a lifestyle and in home new born session, this is ideal about the same time frame. I do understand there is an adjustment period when bringing a new baby home and I want to honor this for your family. Recommended for best outcome would be about 7-14 days old. But what’s great about these type of sessions is there are more “laid back” and non formal so these can be scheduled at anytime! Just remember the older the baby, the more alert they are so they may not cooperate as much when they are younger. But I have faith that we can make it work regardless :)

What is the best way to prepare for my newborn session?

The biggest thing that I can suggest to prepare for this session is to breathe and relax! I am here to help you through this every step of the way. It is stressful having a brand new baby. I get it! Another good tip is to have baby ready with a full tummy and fresh diaper before the session starts. This will ensure that baby is nice and comfy for their time with me whether it is posed and wrapped sessions or just lifestyle in home newborn.

Another tip to ensure we get the best out of your time is making sure your home is warm. This will ensure that baby is not easily startled by being unwrapped and moved around the home. Best thing to do is to make sure the room or area that we will be in to be warmer than you think. Babies get cold easily and so we need to ensure baby sleeps most of the session to get the best out our time together. I would say setting the thermostat around 73-75 in the area we will be and then we can always adjust if the sun is letting in some heat or if we notice baby is uncomfortable.

Next tip is to make sure small areas of each room we are working in are tidied up. They don’t have to be perfect because I am capturing your family as they are so nothing has to be perfect. I usually am referring to trash on nightstands, little things that can be moved out of frame that we don’t want in the photos, etc.

If you have other children that will be included in the session, please make sure you arrange for them to either be watched or occupied while we get some shots of you and baby together alone. I really enjoy getting photos of siblings together! They end of being some of my favorite shots! But they are usually over the whole session about 10 minutes into it, so I normally will get them at the beginning and then whenever they decide they want to join the session again. Lifestyle in home sessions are very much go with the flow. And you are very much welcome to leave baby with me for a few shots if you are comfortable with that while you attend to your other children but if you’d like to be preset and possibly be apart of some of the shots, I just ask that you have someone available to help out with the kiddos to ensure their safety too.

What is best to wear for a newborn session?

I provide a style guide to all my clients as well as have a client closet for mamas that you are welcome to check out. That is all included in your session charge. I also have taken the time to put together an amazon list of outfits for everyone in the family. It will at least give you ideas of what photographs well and what doesn’t. Feel free to message me directly if you need assistance with this. I absolutely LOVE styling my families and clients. It is one of my favorite parts of the “job”.
